George Mason was my wife's cousin, a sailor. He and Lettie,my sister, met at our wedding and fell in love immediately.

George Mason era el primo de mi mujer, un marinero. Él y Lettie, mi hermana, se conocieron en nuestra boda y se enamoraron inmediatamente.

George was a brave man, who loved the sea, and I was not surprised when he decided to travel to the Arctic on a ship called the Pioneer. Lettie was afraid when he told her, but she could not stop him.

My younger brother Harry liked painting, so he decided to paint a picture of George before he left. It was quite a good picture. I thought the face was too white but Lettie was very pleased with it and she put it on the wall in our sitting-room.

A mi hermano más joven, Harry, le gustaba pintar, asi que decidió pintar un retrato de George antes de que partiera. Fue un cuadro bastante bueno. Yo pensé que su rostro estaba demasiado blanco, pero Lettie estaba muy complacida con el resultado y lo colgó en la pared de nuestra sala de estar.

Before the ship sailed, George met the ship's doctor, a Scotsman called Vincent Grieve. He brought him to dinner with us and I disliked him immediately.

Antes de que el barco partiera, George fue al visitar al doctor del barco, un escocés llamado Vincent Grieve. Él (George) lo invitó a cenar con nosotros y me desagradó inmediatamente.

He sat tooclose to Lettie and seemed more like her lover than George. At first George did not notice, but Lettie did and she was unhappy about it.

The strangest thing was when he saw the picture of George on the wall.

He sat down opposite it, butstood up as soon as he saw it.

'I'm sorry,' he said, 'but I cannot look at that picture.'

'Well, I know it's not very good...' I began.

'It's not that it's either good or bad. I know nothing about painting,' he said. 'It's the eyes they seem to follow me everywhere.'

“No es cuestion de que sea bueno o malo. No se nada de pintura” dijo. “Son sus ojos, parece que me siguen a todas partes”

I thought that perhaps he just wanted to move closer to Lettie, but when I saw his face, he looked really frightened.

Pensé que, quizás, lo que quería era ponerse aún más cerca de Lettie, pero cuando vi su cara, el parecía estar realmente asustado.

We were all surprised when Vincent came again the next day. He brought a note for Lettie from George and after that he came almost every day.

On the last day before the ship sailed, Vincent said to Lettie, 'If anything happens to George, I will still love you and you can marry me.'

Lettie was very angry and told him to leave the house at once. She did not tell George about it because she wanted him to leave happily.

The time came for George and Lettie to say goodbye and, when he left, Lettie cried for hours.

Llegó el momento de la despedida entre George y Lettie y, cuando él se fue, Lettie lloró durante horas.

I went in and put my arm around her.

As I looked up, I noticed the picture of George on the wall. The face looked very, very white and I thought there was water on it. Perhaps it's just the light, I thought to myself and tried to forget about it.

Mientras miraba hacia arriba, me percaté del cuadro de George de la pared. Su cara estaba muy muy blanca y pensé que estaba mojado. Quizás es sólo la luz, me dije a mí mismo, e intenté olvidarme de aquello.

The Pioneer sailed.

“El Pionero” zarpó.

George sent two letters, and then a year passed before we heard anything. We once read about the ship in the newspaper, but that was all. Spring-time came, and one beautiful warm evening we were all at home. The children were playing outside and Harry was watching them from the window.

George envió dos cartas, y después pasó un año antes de volver a tener noticias de él. Una vez leimos acerca del barco en un periódico, pero eso fue todo. La primavera llegó, y una preciosa y cálida tarde estabamos en casa. Los niños estaban jugando fuera y Harry les miraba a través de la ventana.

Suddenlythe room felt very cold. Lettie looked up.

De repente la habitación se quedó muy fría. Lettie levantó la mirada.

'How strange,' she said. 'Do you feel how cold it is?'

“Qué extraño”, dijo. “¿Sientes el frío?”

'Just like the weather in the Arctic,' I said.

“Como el tiempo del ártico”, dije.

As I spoke, I looked at the picture on the wall and what I saw made me terribly afraid. His face suddenly looked like a dead man's, with no eyes.

Mientras hablaba, miré al cuadro de la pared y lo que ví me asustó terriblemente. De repente su cara parecía la de un hombre muerto, sin ojos.

Without thinking, I said, 'Poor George.'

Sin pensar dije: “Pobre George”

 ‘What do you mean?’ asked Lettie, looking frightened. ‘Have you heard something about George?’

“¿Qué quieres decir?” preguntó Lettie, mirando asustada. “¿Sabes algo acerca de George?”

 ‘No, no,' I said quickly.

“No, no”, dije rápidamente.

'I was just thinking about the cold weather where he is.’

“sólo estaba pensando en el gélido tiempo que hace donde está”.

At this moment, Harry put his head back into the room. 'Cold?' he said.  ‘Who's cold?’

En ese momento, Harry volvió la cabeza hacia el interior de la habitación. “¿Frío?”, dijo. “¿Quién tiene frío?”

 ‘Did you not feel cold just then?’ asked Lettie. 'We both did.'

“¿No notas frío?”, le preguntó Lettie. “Nosotros, sí”.

'Not at all,' he said happily. 'How can you feel cold on a beautiful spring evening like this?'

No demasiado, dijo felizmente. “¿cómo puedes sentir frío en una tarde de primavera tan bella como la de hoy?

I followed him out of the room.

Le seguí fuera de la habitación.

'Harry,' I said, 'what's the date today?'

“Harry”, dije, “¿qué día es hoy?”

 'It's Tuesday, February the 23rd. Look, here's the newspaper.'

“Hoy es martes, 23 de febrero. Mira, aquí está el periódico”

I told him about the change in the picture and the cold feeling and asked him to write it down. I was sure that George was in some kind of troubleand I wanted to remember everything about that evening.

Le hablé sobre el cambio del cuadro y el frío que habiamos sentido y le pregunté si podía tomar nota. Estaba seguro de que George estaba en apuros y quería recordar todo lo que había sucedido aquella tarde.

Early the next morning there was a knock at the door. It was Harry, looking white and frightened. I knew immediately why he was there.

Temprano, la mañana siguiente, alguien llamó a la puerta. Era Harry, pálido y asustado. Supe al instante porqué estaba allí.

 ‘Have you seen the newspaper?' he asked.

“¿Has visto el periódico?” preguntó.

On the front page was the news that George was dead. One sentence from the newspaper stayed in my mind: 'Lieutenant George Mason was out shooting with the ship's doctor, Vincent Grieve, when he died.’ When I told my wife about George, she began to cry.

En la portada venía la noticia donde ponía que George estaba muerto. Una frase del periódico se me quedó grabada en la mente: “ El teniente George Mason estaba cazando con el médico del barco, Vincent Grieve, cuando murió”. Cuando se lo dije a mi esposa, empezó a llorar.

'How can we tell poor Lettie?' she said.

“¿Cómo se lo vamos a decir a la pobre Lettie?” dijo

'Ssssshh,' said Harry, but it was too late. Lettie was at the door and we had to tell her everything. She fell to the floor, her face as white as paper.

“Ssssshh”, dijo Harry, pero era demasiado tarde. Lettie estaba en la puerta y teníamos que contarle todo. Cayó al suelo, mientras su cara se volvió tan blanca como el papel.

We called the doctor immediately but she was ill for many months. About two months later, I read about the arrival of the Pioneer, George's ship, in Britain. I did not tell Lettie about it as she was only just getting better.

Llamamos al doctor inmediatamente pero estuvo enferma durante meses. Aproximadamente dos meses después, leí sobre la llegada del Pionero, el barco de George, a Bretaña. No le dije nada a Lettie porque estaba empezando a recuperarse.

A day or two after this there was a knock at the door and, as I got up to open it, I noticed George's picture once again. This time, to my surprise, he held one finger upand seemed to be warning me.

Dos días después de esto, alguien llamó a la puerta y, mientras iba a abrir, me dije de nuevo en el cuadro de George. Aquella vez, para mi sorpresa, tenía un dedo levantado y parecía advertirme de algo.

I looked harder at George's face and was almost sure that I could see blood on it. I walked closer and saw that the warning finger was really a small moth, sitting on the picture.

Miré mas detenidamente la cara de George y estoy casi seguro de que vi sangre en ella. Me acerqué y vi que el dedo de advertencia era, en realidad, una pequeña polilla posada en la imagen.

I picked up the sleepy moth and put it under a wine glass. As I did this, the servant came in and said, 'Dr Vincent Grieve is here to see you, sir.'

Cogí la aletargada polilla y la coloqué debajo de un vaso de vino. Mientras lo hacía, el mayordomo se acercó y dijo: “El Dr. Vincent Grieve ha venido a verle, señor”.

As the doctor came in, I saw his face turn white. 'Please, cover that picture of George,' he said. 'It is even harder for me to look at it now that he is dead.'

Mientras el doctor venía, vi cómo su cara se palidecía. “Por favor, cubra ese cuadro de George”, dijo. Me resulta aún mas difícil mirarlo ahora que está muerto.

I covered the picture and Grieve sat down.

Cubrí el cuadro y Grieve se sentó.

 ‘We were out shooting on the ice,’ he said. ‘It was not easy to walk’.Suddenly, George fell. I tried to catch him... I threw my coat for him... I wanted to pull him up, but it was impossible. He fell into the ice-cold sea and slowly his head went under. His last words were ‘Say goodbye to her’.

“Estábamos cazando en el hielo”, dijo, “No era fácil caminar” De repente, George cayó. Intenté agarrarle… le lancé mi abrigo… quería tirar de él, pero fue imposible. Cayó dentro del helado mar y, lentamente, su cabeza se iba hundiendo. Sus últimas palabras fueron “Dile Adiós (a ella)”

As he finished his story, Grieve looked up. He screamed loudly and jumped up, pointing behind me.

Mientras acababa su historia, Grieve miró hacia arriba. Gritó en voz alta y, levantandose, señaló detrás mia.

I looked round. The picture was uncovered again and George's white face looked down at us. I covered it again and Grieve seemed to feel better.

Miré a mi alrededor. El cuadro estaba destapado de nuevo y la pálida cara de George nos miraba. Volví a taparlo y Grieve pareció sentirse mejor.

'I'm sorry,' he said, 'I've been ill.' He stood up. 'I'm sorry,' he said again.

 Then he noticed the little white moth, which was still under the wine glass.

“Lo siento”, dijo, “he estado enfermo”. Se levantó. “Lo siento”, dijo de nuevo. Entonces, se fijó en la pequeña polilla blanca, que estaba todavía debajo del vaso de vino.

'Has someone else from the Pioneer been here?' he asked.

“¿Ha venido alguien del Pionero?” preguntó.

'No,' I answered. 'You are the first.'

“No,”, contesté. “Eres el primero.”

'Then how did this moth get here? It only lives in the Arctic. That's very strange... Well, look after it. It's very unusual.' He left a few minutes later and Harry and I watched him walk down the street.

“¿Entonces como ha llegado hasta aquí la polilla? Sólo se encuentra en el Ártico. Eso es muy extraño. Bueno, después de todo, es muy inusual.” Se fue unos pocos minutos después y Harry y yo le vimos andar calle abajo.

'There's something I don't like about that man,'I said.

“Hay algo en ese hombre que no me gusta,” dije.

 'You're right,' Harry said. 'Do you know he has two shadows? There's someone or something always standing at his side. That explains why he's always so frightened.' We decided not to tell Lettie about his visit.

“Llevas razón,” dijo Harry. “¿Sabías que tenía dos sombras? Hay alguien o algo que siembre está junto a él. Eso explica por qué está siempre tan asustado.” Decidimos no decirle a Letty que nos había visitado.

 Two days later, I arrived home and found my sister very angry.

Dos días después, cuando llegué a casa encontré a mi hermana muy enfadada.

'Grieve came here today and asked me to marry him. He said that George wanted it. I couldn't believe it. We were in the sitting-room and he was standing by the wall. As he was speaking, there was a sound of something breaking, and George's picture fell on his head and cut it open. We had to carry him upstairs and call the doctor.'

Grieve ha venido hoy y me ha pedido que me case con él. Ha dicho que George lo quería. No me lo podía creer. Estábamos en el salón y él estaba de pie junto a la pared. Mientras hablaba, algo sonó como si se estuviera rompiendo, y el cuadro de George se le cayó en la cabeza y le hizo una brecha. Hemos tenido que llevarle a la planta de arriba y llamar al médico.”

I went angrily upstairs but, when I saw Grieve, it was clear that he could understand nothing.

Me dirigí pesaroso a la planta de arriba pero, cuando vi a Grieve, todo estaba tan claro que no me lo podóa creer.

We could not move him and a nurse came to stay with him during the night. At about midnight, the nurse felt something was wrong in the room. She saw his two shadows on the wall and, frightened, went to get Lettie to sit with her. As soon as my sister came into the room, Grieve sat up and started to talk.

No podíamos moverle y la ama de llaves vino para quedarse con él durante la noche. Sobre la medianoche, la ama de llaves sintió que algo malo paraba en la habitación. Ella vio sus dos sombras en la pared y, asustada, fue con Lettie para estar con ella. Tan pronto como mi hermana entró en la habitación, Grieve se levantó y empezó a hablar.

'I could not stop myself,' he said, 'I hit you with my gun because I loved her and now she'll never forgiveme. I murdered you, George, because I loved her. Don't you see? Can't you understand? Please, please leave me alone.'

“No pude detenerme,” dijo, “Te disparé con mi arma porque la amaba y ahora ella nunca me perdonará. Te maté, George, porque la amaba. ¿No te das cuenta? ¿No lo entiendes? Por favor, por favour, déjame en paz.”

As he shouted the last words, he got out of bed and walked backwards slowly, all the time looking at something following him, his eyes wide and afraid. He came to the window and suddenly seemed to decide something. Very quickly, he turned round, opened the window and threw himself out. The nurse and Lettie could not stop him.

Mientras gritaba las ultimas palabras, saltó de la cama y anduvo de espaldas lentamente, mirando todo el tiempo a algo que le estaba siguiendo. Sus ojos estaban dilatados y asustados. Se dirigió a la ventana y, de repente, pareció como si decidiera algo. Rápidamente, se dio la media vuelta, abrió la ventana y se lanzó. La ama de llaves y Lettie no pudieron detenerle.

 Two days later, the police found his body in the river.

Dos días después, la policía encontró su cuerpo en el río.
